Creative process

Natural processes and materials inspire me to study and experiment with everything within my reach and incorporate the four elements: earth, air, fire and water. My choice for encaustic, one of the older processes I use, is a perfect fit for this series. Encaustic in it self is a process of transformation. It has been around since the pyramids. Beeswax and damar resin are slowly heated and mixed into a medium. I add pigments to this mix to achieve the desired colours. Fire fuses the layers together. Sometimes pigments are floated; suspended in alcohol onto a horizontal surface until the alcohol is evaporated and burned into the wax.

Depending on what I'm trying to express, I look for the right application through my visual library of textures. Texture, or its absence, has to embody the narrative of the life cycle and interdependence. I create smooth, heavy, or disintegrating textures accordingly. I also have to keep the next layer in mind. In this case, it is wax, which needs an absorbent surface with no flex. Then I'm ready for more layers of wax and pigments.
